Island Camping
Special Notice: The demand for island visitation peaks in May through September it is very important when planning your camping trip that you first secure boat transportation with Island Packers by making and advanced reservation for the date of your planned excursion. Also, please be aware that Island Packers will not transport items that weigh more than 45 pounds, so pack each bag so that it is equal to or less than this limit. Because cargo space is limited, please try to keep the number of 45lb bags you bring equal to or less than the number of nights you will be staying on the island. To help assure you are well prepared and to help enjoy your island camping experience to the fullest, please take the time to read the information below, and also visit the camping section in the island page for the island you intend to visit.

Camping is available on all five of the Channel Islands. Like our regular schedule for island trips, you can camp all year round on Anacapa and Santa Cruz Islands, while camping on the outer islands, which includes Santa Barbara, Santa Rosa, and San Miguel is available on a seasonal basis.

Camping on the islands allows visitors to explore the more remote areas that just cannot be seen in the time period provided by a day trip.  For those who you enjoy hiking as well as water sports, you just can't fit it all in a single day.  Camping is also a way to enjoy the special beauty of the islands during sunrise and sunset.  Who hasn't imagined living on a remote and deserted island, well camping on the Channel Islands in a remote and beautiful wilderness setting lets you come close to living this dream.

Island Packers provides transportation for campers and camping equipment to the islands.  Campers must hike their gear into the designated campground. You may pack more than one bag, but no bag, ice chest, or piece of equipment can exceed 45 pounds. Some items may not be transported to the park islands, *read the public notice. For more information on packing your camping gear and a list of items that Island Packers will not transport on boats visit Camper Packing Tips. See schedule of fares for the "colored baggage label" information, and label your bags using the color indicated for your island destination (colored tape is available at the Island Packers dock). A brief description of camping facilities for each island can be viewed by looking at the island of your choice within this website.  Camping reservations are required for each island destination, and may range from one night to a one-week stay. Important, before you make your camping reservation you must secure boat transportation with Island Packers. You can make reservations through the The National Park reservation system at the following link, www.recreation.gov or visit National Park website Camping Information page where you will also find detailed information about facilities and regulations regarding camping on each of the Channel Islands. *Please note that no fires are allowed on any of the islands. Camp cooking is allowed only on gas or propane camp stoves. Do not pack fuel in baggage as it must be stored in a special location on the boat during travel for safety reasons. *As with all types of travel, though not common, transportation times and days may have to be altered due to inclement weather and/or sea conditions. Since there are no provisions on the islands, Island Packers suggests you pack a small amount of extra provisions should you need to use them.

Island camping should be considered wilderness camping. There are no services on the islands, and you must pack in all your camping supplies by foot to the campgrounds at each destination. Distances from the landing to the campgrounds can very from 1/2 mile to 4 1/2 miles (more for backcountry camping on SCI & SRI). The camping areas at Santa Cruz isthmus (Del Norte), Anacapa, Santa Barbara, and San Miguel, all have significant elevation gains over some steep terrain. Island Packers recommends that you pack as if you were going on a backpacking trip, with no single item more than 45 lbs. See the camping facilities comparison chart below to help you choose your camping destination.
